City gets a slice of the ‘Mortal Kombat’ action

Hollywood came to the retail heart of Adelaide this week when an unassuming backstreet just off Rundle Mall became the focus for three consecutive overnight film shoots on the highly-anticipated action movie ‘Mortal Kombat’, currently in production in South Australia.

Filming in the city wrapped up just before sunrise this morning (September 28) but, through the night, brick-lined Fisher Place at the northern end of Gawler Place and parts of the interior of The Gallerie building next to it were again buzzing with action while most of Adelaide was sleeping.

lights, camera, action! The northern end of Gawler Place was lit uP for overnight filming.

The overnight filming started on Wednesday evening (25 September), bringing a host of cast, crew (including local extras!) and all the necessary support teams into the city – setting up light rigs and creating sets – to shoot scenes that will be splashed across cinema screens worldwide when ‘Mortal Kombat’ comes out in 2021.

The biggest film production in South Australia’s history, New Line Cinema’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ is based on the blockbuster video game franchise and is being brought to life right here in Adelaide by a team of world-renowned Australian filmmakers led by Simon McQuoid, in his feature directorial debut and producer James Wan (‘Aquaman’, The Conjuring’).

Production on ‘Mortal Kombat’ is being shot in several locations throughout South Australia, with a one-day shoot in Port Adelaide earlier this month.

Attracting the making of a movie of ‘Mortal Kombat’s’ magnitude to South Australia is paying big dividends on the local front. The production is set to create around 580 jobs with 1,500 local extras employed and provide a financial boost of about $70 million to the State’s economy*.

‘Mortal Kombat’ is set for release on 5 March 2021 and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
